TextEffect

With the retiring of the Windows application 'Wordpad', I found balatedly that I actually had a use for this application. Initially the project started as one of developing ways to programmatically colour the words of a small document in different ways. I found that I then went on to develop a whole Wordpad like application for manipulating text (which actually has the ability to save output as a . pdf as well). This got me thinking with the coercian coming from America what the steps would be to replace reliance on Big Tech (office-like) software. Perhaps it would start from this one enhancing it so that it has full Word-like features, but still based on a Windows operating system initially say. So if they are still letting us use Windows and development tools we start by replacing office-like products (but on Windows still). But if there is the nuclear option and use of Windows is no longer permitted (even if we've bought it) we're onto the present day alternatives - Linux - developign a good development environment, the compiler (I know students used to do this, i had a friend who did!) and then the products. We've got and have learned all the analogies for development and that's half the battle. A very big task I must admit and the profit motive wont serve very well at all. But if our friends declare war on us so be it. We've now got the Germans on our side this time :). We've also developed new operating system before for starting completely from scratch (Bosch does this, for example, I know). Strange times.

We now find the brainwave of the pdf specification in that it is not possible to draw a line using relative coordinates. This effectively forces you to store and calculate with the minutae of character (glyph) dimensions when navigating a page. This was unexpected to me. Anybody up for writing a document format (friendly for printing) that has these properties. Call it a . pfd document. The British pdf.

The weakness that my previous comment highlighted seems to have been fixed. Whether it was a tightening of my own (beta) developments, or a fix by Microsoft, I am not too sure. Anyway grateful either way. The issue was tight coding of bold or italic keywords (multiple control codes with no spaces between the codes). :).

The buttons you see here on the blue panel produce an . rtf file according to the . rtf specification (as developed by Microsoft I believe). However whether a richTextBox or Word will be able to read it or not, is an entirely different question. Any body up for writing an . rtf reader (according to the specification)?.
